The conference, which ran over several days, attracted participation from sustainability experts and thought leaders globally. The 11th edition of the International Sustainability Conference (SUSCON-XI), organized by IIM Shillong, concluded successfully with its theme, 'Climate Positive World', marking a significant milestone in the Institute's flagship annual event. The conference, which ran over several days, attracted participation from sustainability experts and thought leaders globally. It was supported by GAIL India Ltd and Numaligarh Refinery Ltd as industry sponsors, IIMS Journal of Management Science as the publication partner, and the Corporate Environmental Management (CEM) Research Group at Jyväskylä School of Business and Economics (JSBE), University of Jyväskylä, Finland, as the knowledge partner.

A Global Platform for Sustainability Dialogue

The conference began with an opening address by Professor Basav Roychoudhury, Dean of Research at IIM Shillong, who welcomed the participants and dignitaries. He emphasized the importance of sustainability as an evolving global challenge and the role of research in driving impactful solutions. Over the course of the event, participants from across the world, including countries like India, Hungary, USA, and Finland, presented their research papers and prototypes. The conference received an overwhelming 301 submissions, from which 118 papers were selected after a thorough review process.

The high-quality research shared at the conference underscores the growing global recognition of sustainability and its integration into academia, industry, and civil society. An IIM Shillong statement highlighted the conference’s role in facilitating cross-border collaboration on sustainability challenges.

A Storied Legacy of Thought Leadership

Since its inception, SUSCON has evolved into a global platform for dialogue, uniting key stakeholders from various sectors. The conference has consistently featured influential figures in the sustainability field. Over the years, notable personalities such as Bharat Ratna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Padma Bhushan Dr Sundarlal Bahuguna, and Jadav Payeng, known as the ‘Forest Man of India’, have graced the event, reflecting IIM Shillong's commitment to sustainability. The conference continues to build on this legacy of thought leadership and collective action.

The conference’s chief guest, Shyam Sundar Paliwal, a Padma Shri awardee, delivered a powerful address on the importance of self-reliance and sustainability in rural communities. Paliwal shared his remarkable story of environmental activism in Piplantri, a village in Rajasthan, where 111 trees are planted for every girl born as part of a unique initiative aimed at promoting gender equality, empowerment, and environmental conservation. This initiative has not only transformed the village but has also become a symbol of growth and sustainable development in rural India.
