There has been a remarkable uptick in interest in STEM-certified business programs, particularly in India and Greater China

Indian students aspiring for advanced business education are increasingly prioritizing themes of artificial intelligence (AI), equity and inclusion, and sustainability, reveals the latest survey conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). In a rapidly evolving educational landscape, these factors are emerging as decisive considerations for prospective business school candidates in India.

The survey underscores a significant shift in student preferences, with over two-thirds of respondents expressing the importance of equity and inclusion, as well as sustainability, in their academic journey. Moreover, three-quarters of candidates emphasized the significance of well-being, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which encompass vital aspects such as poverty eradication and economic growth. Notably, many students indicated that the absence of these elements in a curriculum could deter them from considering certain institutions.

One of the key drivers of interest among Indian students is the increasing relevance of generative AI technology. Demand for AI-focused curricula surged by 38 percent compared to the previous year, with a notable preference observed among millennials and male candidates. This trend reflects a growing recognition of the transformative potential of AI across industries, driving students to seek specialized education in this field.

Additionally, there has been a remarkable uptick in interest in STEM-certified business programs, particularly in India and Greater China, where demand has reached unprecedented levels. This surge underscores a growing inclination towards disciplines that integrate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, signaling a shift towards more specialized and future-oriented educational paths.

Commenting on these findings, Joy Jones, CEO of GMAC, highlighted the evolving aspirations of candidates and the importance of business education in fostering social impact and adaptability. Jones emphasized the need for business schools to align with these changing demands, offering a diverse range of programs and flexible learning formats to cater to individual preferences.

Furthermore, the survey revealed a growing preference for hybrid learning models, with candidates expressing a desire for a blend of in-person and online instruction. This trend reflects the increasing importance of flexibility in education, mirroring the dynamics of modern workplaces where hybrid arrangements are becoming commonplace.

In terms of study destinations, while the United States traditionally held sway as the preferred choice for many Indian students, there has been a notable shift towards domestic institutions. Affordability emerged as a primary factor driving this trend, coupled with a growing recognition of the quality of education offered by Indian universities.

Curtis Alan Ferguson, a board member of GMAC, noted the rising prominence of Asian educational institutions and economic opportunities, which are reshaping student mobility patterns. While Western institutions still maintain their appeal, particularly in terms of reputation and career preparation, the allure of in-region institutions is becoming increasingly compelling for Indian candidates.

As Indian students navigate their options for advanced business education, the convergence of AI, inclusion, and sustainability emerges as a defining aspect of their decision-making process. With evolving preferences and priorities, business schools must adapt to meet the diverse needs of today's aspirational student cohort, ensuring they are equipped to thrive in an ever-changing global landscape.
