Medical colleges in Karnataka gear up to tackle rising cases of Covid-19

Chief Secretary P Ravi Kumar has issued orders to private hospitals and medical colleges to ensure the patient referred for Covid-19 treatment should get the beds immediately.

Karnataka is witnessing a rising number of Covid-19 cases. The infected persons also include medical students as yesterday as many as 31 MBBS students of Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) were found to be Covid-19 positive. The latest is, Chief Secretary P Ravi Kumar has directed the private medical colleges and hospitals in the state to ensure that the patients referred to these hospitals for Covid-19 treatment must get the bed immediately.

He has ordered the medical college hospitals to immediately reserve and keep ready 30% beds in each of these categories - ICU, HDU/ oxygenated, ICU with ventilator, and general beds for treatment of Covid-19 patients. The order also said that the private medical college hospitals must reserve up to 50% of beds of all categories by January 7 and up to 75% of beds by January 10. The order is to be implemented with immediate effect and the hospitals must ensure that beds are free for Covid-19 treatment by January 7.

He has directed the labour department to ensure that the employees working in IT industries and factories and others must be fully vaccinated and follow the Covid-19 norms.

The new restrictions are in place in Karnataka including weekend and night curfews to curb the spread of the virus. Dr Sudhakar K, Karnataka Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Medical Education, has tweeted, "80% of adult population in Karnataka is now fully vaccinated with both doses! Karnataka stands 3rd in the country for second dose coverage among large states."
