Nearly 100 students of Patiala Government Medical College are found to be Covid-19 positive, these students are likely to be infected with the Omicron variant of coronavirus.

Amid the rising cases of coronavirus all across the country, Patiala Government Medical College's nearly 100 students are found to be Covid-19 positive. 

After the cases came to light, the district administration has asked all students staying at the hostel to vacate their rooms immediately. All cases are expected to be of the Omicron variant. The samples have been sent for genome sequencing and the Patiala administration has decided to shut all educational institutions. Patiala is among the worst-hit places in Punjab.

Patiala Government Medical College is the second education institution in Patiala that has witnessed a spike in cases. Before this, the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology had reported as many as 98 cases.

As per reports, the medical college saw an increase in cases after it held a retirement party and New Year Eve's party on the campus without strictly following the Covid-19 protocols.

The Punjab government has imposed fresh restrictions amid the rising cases. There will be a night curfew across the state between 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. till January 15. Schools and colleges will also remain shut to curb the spread of the virus.

On Tuesday, Punjab had reported 1,027 new cases. With this, the positivity rate has increased to 6.49%. Patiala, Mohali, Ludhiana and Pathankot reported 366, 149, 103 and 88 cases respectively on Tuesday.
