157 New Medical Colleges to be set up, govt approves plan: Health Minister

The Government is planning to strengthen healthcare infrastructure  in remote areas by upgrading district hospitals into Medical colleges. A total of 157 New Medical Colleges will be set up in phased manner. Read the article for more detail.

The Government has given nod to establish 157 new Medical Colleges in those districts where there are no Medical Colleges as of now. The existing hospitals in these districts will be upgraded and converted into Medical Colleges, the Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare Ashwini Kumar Choubey reportedly informed the Parliament recently.

He said the Medical Colleges will be set up in three phases under a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for ‘Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals’. In a written reply, the Health Minister presented statewise details of these 157 Medical Colleges and fund allocated to start the colleges. In the first phase, a total of 58 Medical Colleges will be established across 20 states. Under phase two, 8 states will get 24 Medical Colleges while in phase three 75 Medical Colleges will be set up in 18 states.

Under Phase one, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will get a maximum number of Medical Colleges-seven each, followed by Uttar Pradesh, and Assam. The name of the seven districts which will get Medical Colleges in Rajasthan includes Barmer, Bharatpur, Bhilwara, Churu, Dungarpur, Pali, and Sikar. Madhya Pradesh’s seven districts are Datia, Khandwa, Ratlam, Shahdol, Vidisha, Chhindwara, and Shivpuri. The Five districts of the Uttar Pradesh to get a college are Basti, Faizabad, Firozabad, Shahjahanpur, and Bahra. Assam will get a total of 4 new Medical colleges.

The total cost of establishing one Medical College under Phase one is Rs 189 crore. The Fund sharing ration between the Centre and states government under this phase is 90:10 for North East & other Special Category States and 60:40 for other states.

Under Phase two, Uttar Pradesh will get maximum-8 colleges, followed by 5 each in Bihar and West Bengal. The total cost of establishing one Medical College under Phase one is Rs 250 crore.

Under Phase three, Rajasthan will get 15 Medical Colleges in 15 districts, followed by Uttar Pradesh(13), Namil Tamil Nadu(10), and MP(5).
