20% increase in PG medical seats, 900 MBBS seats added in UP GMC, says UP govt
Alok Kumar, UP principal secretary of medical education, has highlighted that the number of PG seats has been increased to 518 and as many as 1,250 MBBS seats have been added in GMCs and private medical colleges in the last year.
As per the UP government's official statement, the Uttar Pradesh government has added 900 MBBS seats and 20% of seats are added in PG medical courses in government medical colleges (GMCs).
Alok Kumar, UP principal secretary of medical education has said, “Another feather in the cap of Team Medical Education of UP government. After a record increase of 900 MBBS seats, a whopping 20% increase in PG (200) seats in Govt Medical Colleges in a year. A game-changer in addressing adverse doctor population ratio in UP.”
As per the official data, in the year 2020-21, the GMCs had 1027 PG seats, which has been increased to 1227 PG seats in 2021-22. Moreover, the private medical colleges witnessed an increase of 318 PG seats
As far as undergraduate medical seats are concerned, last year there were a total of 2928 UG seats which has increased by 900 seats this year, taking the total to 3828 seats in GMCs. The PG seats have been increased to 518 and in both private and government medical colleges, a total of 1,250 MBBS seats have been added.
“Uttar Pradesh is on its way to becoming a hub of medical education in the coming times. Improving health education has been a priority of the Yogi Adityanath-led government for which significant steps were taken in the last five years. With the opening of new medical colleges, the opportunities for the youth willing to study medicine will also increase significantly," Kumar said, as per reports.
