447 MBBS students from Bihar demand promotion despite failing in exam

Medical students in Bihar who have failed in the MBBS professional examination are demanding to be promoted on basis of internal marks, however authorities have rejected their demand.

Nearly 37% of medical students from nine medical colleges in Bihar were declared failed in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) professional examination. The students are now protesting on the streets and demanding that they must be promoted on the basis of internal marks but the authorities have rejected their demand as there is no such provision in the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKU), Patna conducted the first university examination in March. Nearly, 1,100 students of the 2019 batch from the nine medical colleges appeared in the examination. Around 447 students that are 37% failed the examination. These students met the university vice-chancellor to demand their promotion. The authorities have advised them to appear for a supplementary exam which will be conducted later this month.

The results of the exam was declared on August 30. The university said that this was the worst performance by the MBBS students ever since the university was established in the year 2010. The nine medical colleges are Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH), Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital (ANMMCH), Gaya, Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Vardhman Medical College (VMC), Pawapuri (Nalanda), Government Medical College (GMC), Betia, Madhubani Medical College (MMC), Madhepura Medical College (MMC), Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH), Bhagalpur.

The students said the classes were conducted online and the quality of online teaching was not satisfactory at all. However, the exams were taken offline and the exam pattern was also changed. They also alleged that the answer sheets were not checked properly and demanded a re-evaluation of the answer sheets. The authorities have rejected this demand as well.
