AIIMS Nagpur's dean suspends 7 MBBS students for 'gross indiscipline'

Taking stringent action against indiscipline Dr Mrunal Pathak, Dean (Academics) AIIMS Nagpur suspended 7 MBBS students from college and hostel from the period November 23, 2022, to May 22, 2023.

The suspension letter by the dean reads, "this is due to gross indiscipline on your part and violation of institute rule." However, Dr Pathak said, "Deliberations are underway over the action, and it may be revoked," as reported by TOI.

Dr Vibha Dutta, Director, AIIMS Nagpur said the suspended students are still on the campus and they would deliberate over the action. “We shall also talk to their parents. They are our kids too. The institute encourages taking corrective measures and helps establish positive attitudes among students. We not only want them to be good doctors but also good citizens. It is important to instil a sense of right and wrong in day-to-day life. We are concerned about their mental, physical and spiritual well-being. But sometimes we have to take tough measures, which are not taken daily but rarely,” she said.

As per sources, these students called first-year students to their hostel rooms at night and some altercation ensued.

Even faculty members are in shock over such huge punishment, they are saying one or two-month suspension is acceptable in case a major breach is committed as such long punishment could ruin careers.
