AIIMS Patna reframed its own syllabus for MBBS courses focussing on the early clinical attachment of the medical students, community exposure, research and developing better ethics and interpersonal communication with patients.

AIIMS Patna Syllabus: All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), Patna reframed its own syllabus for the MBBS course which focuses on early clinical attachment of the medical students, community exposure, research and developing better ethics and interpersonal communication with patients. According to the reports, AIIMS Patna disconnected the curriculum of MBBS course with AIIMS Delhi and reframed it in a way in which medical students will have a public interface with patients in the first year of MBBS course. The change in the curriculum of MBBS course is made by the dean of AIIMS Patna, Dr Umesh Bhadani. Mr Bhadani stated that the public interface with patients was added for the third year students according to the previous MBBS curriculum.

As part of the reframed syllabus, a month of compulsory elective with an institution would be a must for medical students. explaining the same, Dr Bhadani said, the medical students who were interested in studying seashore or factory diseases should go to an institution which is associated near the seashore for a month and understand the subject better. Dr Prabhat Kumar Singh, the director of AIIMS Patna stated that the early exposure to the community for the medical candidates has been added in the newly framed curriculum. Dr Singh added, “our medicos will have to flag to us any adverse medical or social condition they find among the family members while studying their health status. They will be expected to report, say, for instance, a malnourished child in the community, or any family member suffering from serious non-communicable disease, which has been diagnosed so far. This will not only empower our students but also create an opportunity for them to shoulder patient responsibility on a small scale.”

AIIMS Patna Syllabus Details

During the MBBS course, the medicos should be the brand ambassadors in the community and they should coordinate with the doctors and officials at the AIIMS Patna to serve the medical requirement of the family. According to the new syllabus, each medico should adopt one family from a rural area and study their health condition throughout the duration of the MBBS course. The candidates should be a bridge between the family and AIIMS Patna. The initiative would help the poor family get medical assistance and the medical students will get a chance to understand the patients better and develop empathy towards them.

According to the new curriculum which was effective from January 1, 2021, Students must have a minimum of 75% attendance in academics, elective posting, co-curricular activities and sports to be eligible to write the final semester examination. Undertaking observational research is a must for MBBS students. Completion of two research projects on hospital functioning is a must during the five-year course. This will be beneficial to improve the functioning of the hospital and helps the students to develop their thought process towards research. As per Dr Bhadani, the medicos should interview the outdoor patients and collect details about their stress. The interview could be about the long wait for consultation, late arrival of the doctor, rude behaviours of staff, etc. This will help AIIMS Patna to receive direct feedback from the patients. A weightage of 40% will given to internal marks and 60% weightage will be given to the final exams while calculating the overall percentage of the candidate after the final examination.
