AIMSA writes to health minister about internship challenges of FMGs India

All India Medical Students' Association (AIMSA) has written to the union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya about the various issues faced by Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) of India.

The letter highlighted that there are limited internship opportunities for FMGs in India and the scarcity of internship positions results in significant delays in the career progression of these graduates. Also, often FMGs are not remunerated for their internship work, even though it is an essential part of their medical training. This lack of financial support can lead to undue hardship, considering the substantial investment these individuals have made in their education, said AIMSA.

Hence, AIMSA has demanded the minister to increase the number of internship positions for these FMGs, for ensuring timely career progression and ensuring these graduates receive appropriate remuneration for their internship work.

"Expand Internship Opportunities: Address the deficit of internship positions to accommodate foreign medical graduates, ensuring they can fulfil their licensing requirements promptly," reads AIMSA's letter.

"Guarantee Fair Remuneration: Establish policies that ensure equitable compensation for the work conducted by foreign medical graduates during their internships, alleviating financial strain and fostering fairness," added the AIMSA's letter.

"I feel that FMGs are been harassed in all possible ways. FMGE exam is also very hard to crack. Now after clearing this exam when we need so much docs in our hospitals , they are been denied internship d/t ill policies of NMC. We stand with you !!," reads a tweet by Dr. Rohan Krishnan, Former President of FAIMA.
