FMGs may face adverse effects on their mental well-being and academic progression, said AIMSA in its letter.

AIMSA writes to Mansukh Mandaviya, NMC about 3-year internship for FMGs

FMGs Internship: All India Medical Students' Association (AIMSA) has written to the union health minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya and the Chairman of the National Medical Commission about the recent notification of NMC where the Commission released clarifications on various issues related to Foreign Medical Graduates. In the public notice, NMC said that existing FMGs, if any, already performing internships at present, may be allowed to continue with one year of internship. They may subsequently do one year clinical clerkship and one year internship. (Thus a total of three (3) years, before obtaining Permanent Registration from concerned SMC).

Now as per AIMSA' letter, FMGs are citizens of India and they can face adverse effects on their mental well-being and academic progression with such stringent regulations.

"This notice proposes additional years for FMGs to compensate for the practical training lost due to Covid - 19 and War in Ukraine. It poses a significant setback in the academic journey of the affected students. A two years of paid clerkship plus a one year of unpaid internship, total 3 years would result in a considerable academic delay and financial burden," reads AIMSA's letter.

The Association added that the FMGs are citizens of India and colleagues. They may face adverse effects on their mental well being and academic progression with such stringent regulations.

We believe that the existing screening test exam with compensatory one year of clerkship for the online study part due to covid pandemic and war torn students from Ukraine, couopled with a one year internship, adequately assess their quality, knowledge, skills and patient care management. A extra year would hamper their mental and physical well being, added the Association.
