Calcutta Medical College: Hunger strike continues for student council elections demand
The hunger strike of students started on December 8, 2022, and today they are expecting to meet Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam.
The students of Calcutta Medical College are adamant that the student council elections should be held on the pre-decided schedule, i.e. December 22, 2022. Five of the students sat on a hunger strike on December 8, 2022, they are still on the hunger strike for their demand on elections and their health is reportedly getting affected due to the protest.
As per the Indian Express report, Kolkata's Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam will be holding a meeting with the protesting students today at Swasthya Bhawan to resolve the issue. Earlier also, he met the students but no solution could be found. When he visited the Calcutta Medical College on Saturday, slogans were raised. The students are not ready to discontinue the strike unless their demands are met.
Earlier, the protesters had gheraoed college's principal and senior faculty members for nearly 30 hours.

As per principal Indranil Biswas, the health parameters of some of the students on a hunger strike had worsened.
“We have senior doctors. We will take care of the students’ health. But they (officials at Nabanna) have to decide on the issue of the election. The hunger strike would not have started if the election was held on time,” Biswas said on Saturday, as reported by Telegraph India.
The students are demanding the elections be held on the earlier announced schedule i.e. on December 22, which the college authorities declined later.
“There are two reasons why the election cannot be held on December 22. One, the poll expenses will be borne by the state government. I have been told that at a time when the state is taking austerity measures, the expense for the student union election may not be allowed. Secondly, the law and order arrangements are also important,” added Indranil Biswas.
