Centre plans Institute of National Importance like status for NEIGRIHMS

Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya wrote a letter to Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister AL Hek on Wednesday and said that the Centre is proposing to declare NEIGRIHMS as an INI. Read here for more details.

Reportedly, the Centre is proposing to declare the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) as an Institute of National Importance (INI).

As per the report of The Meghalayan, this was stated by the Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya in a letter to Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister AL Hek on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Hek said that Mandaviya had replied to his letter on the matter on Wednesday.

“It is informed that currently, no proposal is under consideration for the upgradation of NEIGRIHMS, Shillong as AIIMS however, a proposal for declaring NEIGRIHMS as INI (Institute of National Importance) is under consideration in the Ministry,” Mandaviya wrote to Hek.

INI is almost the same as AIIMS as there will be added facilities and employees, including doctors and specialists, will benefit immensely, he added. 

“This will ensure NEIGRIHMS can retain doctors in the institute,” he said.

On October 14, 2023, Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated a new Regional Cancer Centre, a new undergraduate medical College, New Building of Nursing College, Hostels, 8 Modular Operation Theatres, a Virtual Autopsy and New Guest House at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong, Meghalaya. He laid the foundation stone for a 150-bed Critical Care Block at the institute. Shri Heaving Stone Kharpran, Member of Legislative Assembly, Meghalaya and Prof. Nalin Mehta, Director, NEIGRIHMS were also present.
