The new GMC will be attached to the district and referral hospital Handwara in North Kashmir.

Centre has given its approval and sanctioned funds of Rs 325 crore for a new government medical college (GMC) in Handwara in North Kashmir. The college will be attached with the district and referral hospital functioning there.

“The new college in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district will be set up at a cost of Rs 325 crore under a centrally-sponsored scheme. The Union health and family welfare ministry has sent the sanction letter to the J&K government,” an official spokesman said quoting a statement issued by the administration of new medical colleges.

Of the total amount, Rs 115 crore will be spent on the construction of administrative and academic blocks, Rs 80 crore on residential accommodation and hostels for students and faculty, Rs 60 crore for upgrading the existing teaching faculty at the district hospital, and Rs 70 crore will be spent on procuring machinery and equipment for the government medical college and its associated hospital.

The ministry had sought a proposal from the J&K government to establish new government medical colleges.

Atal Dulloo, Financial Commissioner, Health and Medical Education, said that the establishment of the new medical college will improve the quality of healthcare services and increase the availability of health professionals in the district.

The introduction of new medical colleges will promote affordable medical education in the new union territory besides creating added job avenues and enhancing healthcare standards in the government sector, he added.
