Create infrastructure for 11 medical colleges: Madras HC to state govt
Madras High Court directed the state government to create infrastructure at the earliest for the 11 new medical colleges.
The Madras High Court has directed the state government to build the required infrastructure for the 11 new medical colleges at Krishnagiri, Ramanathapuram, Namakkal, Virudhunagar, Tirupur, Dindigul, Tiruvallur, Nilgiris, Kallakurichi, Nagapattinam, and Ariyalur districts.
The court said to the state government to take the appropriate actions to construct the buildings including labs so that the National Medical Commission (NMC) can approve to begin medical admissions with the intake of 150 MBBS students each from the current academic session 2021-22.
The high court also said that the establishment of medical colleges is not only for medical education but also for improving healthcare facilities in unserved areas and treating locals. The approval must be given to only those colleges established in places where there are no colleges as crowding of medical colleges in one area would not help the people of the state, added the court.
A division bench of Justice B Pugalendhi and Justice N Kirubakaran (since retired) observed that there is not equal distribution of medical colleges in the state and there is huge inconsistency. Other than the 23 government medical colleges and three government-controlled medical colleges, there are approximately 25 private medical colleges and 16 to 20 of these private medical institutes are situated in and around Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chennai districts.
