Delhi HC directs Centre to release INR 5 crore to AIIMS
The Delhi high court has directed the Central government to release INR crore to AIIMS for the treatment of children with rare diseases so that their treatment should not be stopped due to lack of funds. Justice Prathiba M Singh ordered that the funds should release in two weeks.
The Delhi high court has asked the Union of India to immediately release INR 5 crore to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to ensure that the treatment of children with rare diseases should not stop due to lack of funds.
The order was given by Justice Prathiba M Singh. She ordered to release of the funds within two weeks and its expenditure shall be maintained by AIIMS under the direct supervision of the doctor heading its Rare Diseases Committee, as reported by Live Law.
The Union of India is also directed to file an affidavit giving complete information about the funds released from the Rare Diseases Fund to various Centres for Excellence and the number of patients for whom treatment has been approved to date.
The court observed that AIIMS, Delhi is recognised as a “centre of excellence” for treating rare diseases and is the nodal centre of the Consortium of Centres of Excellence under the National Policy for Rare Diseases, 2021.
The high court has ordered the Centre to “immediately release” the money and only two weeks period is given for the same. “Upon funds being received, the medicines shall be immediately procured by AIIMS and the treatment shall be recommenced,” said the court.
