Delhi University plans to set up nanomedical institute

For doing research on diseases such as sickle cell disease, cancer and diabetes, Delhi University may soon get an Institute of Nanomedical Sciences (INMS).

As per reports, Delhi University (DU) is planning to set up an Institute of Nanomedical Sciences (INMS) and the proposal to set up this institute is expected to come in the Executive Council (EC) on December 17. The nanomedical institute will be established to facilitate research on diseases like diabetes, sickle cell disease, and cancer. 

The proposal to set up INMS in DU had come in the Academic Council meeting and was passed despite some opposition. As per the documents sent to the members of EC, DU's nanomedical institute will be mission-driven and will bring together the various researchers from the field of Computation, Medicine, Chemistry and Biology from DU, other medical schools in Delhi and Wayne State School of Medicine.

The nanomedical institute will also collaborate with public health experts and scientists to address medical challenges across the world, as stated in the documents. The institute will help in building and sustaining international ties to facilitate discovery in areas of kidney, diabetes, sickle cell disease and cancer researches.

The members of the governing body of INMS will include the DRDO secretary, secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, secretaries of the Education Ministry and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and international experts from the field of nanomedicine. The governing body will establish an international advisory board that will advise the nanomedicine institute on matters of special researches.
