DNB Doctors’ Association recommends ways to improve poor passing percentage of DNB final Orthopedics

Association of DNB Doctors has written to the union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya and other ministers of the ministry about what could be the reason behind the poor passing percentage of DNB final Orthopedics.

“Since Covid-19 outbreak the National Board of Examinations changed the pattern of examination from offline to online and hybrid mode. Since then the passing percentage decreased in all specialities and especially in few specialities like Orthopedics adn Radiodiagnosis,” reads the letter.

The following points are highlighted by the association as possible reasons for the poor show and they also recommended the solutions.

NBE is a non statutory body and not funded by the GOI. In fact government put pressure on NBE to generate more funds for government. The latest being the illegal GST collected by NBE which was stayed by the Delhi High Court. The association has suggested that not charge repeated exam fees nad instead fix one time fees.

NBE Examiners are hand picked, significant numbers are selected from Delhi only with few, almost nil from other states such as North East, Bihar and many more. The possible solution is selection of examiners should be transparent with larger cohort and on rotation basis.

Many NBE examiners run coachings, mobile applications and books. These examiners are known to force the candidates to buy these side businesses. NBE should ask examiners to declare any conflict of interest before getting appointed as examiners.

Previously, in DNB final theory exam there was no restriction of usage of answer sheets and candidates were allowed to attempt the questions as per wish sequence. But since hybrid mode took over, the candidates are forced to attempt the answer in a given sequence and in the provided space only even if he or she want to write more. The examiners used to check lengthy answers since beignning and now they get limited space answer script, hence the poor marking is inevitable. The association has requested NBE to shift to the previous exam system.

In the hybrid mode, examiners checking the answer script are not writing any comments on the candidates answers for future reference and betterment. The association has requested NBE to ask examiners to put comments in the answer scripts mandatory, without which the answers shall be deemed as unchecked.
