Doctors again demand nationwide Central Protection Act for safety at work

In the wake of the death of a young MBBS intern in Kerala, the doctors association is once again demanding a nationwide Central Protection Act for the security of doctors.

Yesterday, Dr Vandana Das, a 23-year-old house surgeon of Manjoor, Kerala died after an under-trial patient in police custodian stabbed her six times with the scissors from the dressing room. After this tragic incident and many more incidents of attacks on doctors, now the medical fraternity is once again demanding a nationwide Central Protection Act for the security of doctors.

RDA AIIMS will be liaising with other RDAs and associations in Delhi and decide on a step-wise agenda to successfully implement a nationwide Central Protection Act for the Security of Doctors, said Dr Datta of AIIMS Delhi and also a former FAIMA member.

"This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for stronger measures to ensure safety and security of medical personnel across the country. It is disheartening to witness such brutal incidents of violence against doctors on a multiple occassions. Health care gives particularly doctors sacrifice most of their personal time and youth in achieving the necessary expertise to serve and help people in times of adversity. It is such a sad state of affairs and pitiful society, in which the hands that help are bleeding and also left alone to die," said RDA AIIMS's official statement.

"This worrying incident is brutally shocking to the medical fraternity of the country. We demand for a strong legislation to prevent further such heinous act," said RDA of University College of Medical Sciences & Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital statement.

Healthcare worker protection act (Central Protection act) for incidents of violence against doctors on duty has been a long-standing demand of various doctors' associations.
