Doctors refuse to join GMERS colleges on contract basis

The doctors have declined to join GMERS medical colleges on a contractual basis after they have received the appointment orders.

GMERS (Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society) had sent appointment orders to 57 eligible candidates for contractual hiring of teachers-cum-doctors in any of the eight medical colleges under it. However, the doctors have denied taking up these jobs.

These appointees have refused to accept the jobs in spite of the new rule that allows them to appear for interviews of medical colleges of their choice and getting direct recruitment to the posts. The appointees are not ready for the job insecurity of the contractual jobs and also the issues with leaves in such appointments.

Ahmedabad Mirror quoted a senior official from a GMERS hospital, “Two regular doctors of the rank of Assistant Professors received appointment orders but the uncertainty over contract renewal after 11 months dissuaded them from accepting the contractual appointment.”

Hiren Prajapati, president of GMERS Medical Teachers Association said “The 11-month contractual hiring strips doctors of all professional dignity, leaving appointees in doubt over whether their contracts will be renewed or not.”

The number of doctors who have rejected these appointments this year is even higher than those rejected GMERS appointments in 2020. Back then, out of 309 vacancies, 98 candidates had been given appointment orders and 56 had accepted the jobs as medical teachers and 42 had rejected to join these jobs on a contractual basis.

In the year 2021, out of 349 vacancies for Class-I and II medical teachers at GMERS medical colleges, 147 candidates had been given the appointment orders. Out of these 90 candidates have accepted the job whereas 57 doctors and tutors have refused these appointments.
