DU Medical College students, faculty oppose Covid care facility
Faculty members and students of the University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) have written to the President of India and the Delhi Government against the proposed Covid care facility building inside the campus.
Students and faculty members of a medical college under the Delhi University (DU) have written to the President of India and the Delhi government against the building of a proposed Covid-19 care facility inside the college campus.
According to the faculty and students of UCMS the area selected for the proposed Covid care facility is a playground for the students and also a bird diversity hotspot. They have urged the government to relocate the facility.
The students and faculty members also held protest on Monday with many staff of Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital held placards with slogans like “Don’t leave the campus peeled”, “Save Central Field”, and others.
The teachers association's letter reads: "We appreciate and support this initiative of developing Covid-dedicated infrastructure in east Delhi. However, we find that the proposed site of the building will damage the rich biodiverse green area of the complex, when in fact there is the availability of land (Under Delhi govt) in the nearby areas. The proposed site is already a playground, which is an essential feature of a medical educational institution."
As per the TOI, the protesters said a Covid care facility near Ramlila Ground is under-utilised.
The Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia's office has forwarded the letter to the directorate of higher education for appropriate action.
National Medical Commission (NMC) had released an advisory to the medical colleges and asked them to establish a robust training framework for handling Covid related challenges. NMC also recommended that all health professionals like doctors, nurses and clinical staff must undergo the training and get the certification.
