NMC News on NMC

An Association of Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) met the National Medical Commission (NMC) officials in order to discuss issues faced by FMGs in India. The association discussed with Dr Yogender Malik, Member of the Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) and Head of the Media Division at NMC over three major points namely non-payment of stipend, 2-year internship rule and the limited number of seats available for FMGs.

"On a war footing now, a delegation representing #FMG interests met with officials at @NMC_IND today. Key points raised: • #Stipend for interns (currently none) •Absorption of students into various teaching and non-teaching hospitals of states. (Currently, there are waiting lists for starting internship!) • Rethinking the merits and demerits of a 3-year internship for a special batch of students. Hoping for a positive response from the authorities. #FMG have suffered and faced enormous challenges & discrimination. Some humanitarian approach is need of the hour." The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) mentioned on X (formerly Twitter).

Furthermore, The General Secretary of FORDA, Dr. Sarvesh Pandey said that officials have given positive hope and an early redressal concerning issues faced by FMGs, as reported by Medical Dialogues.

Concern 1: Allow More Internship Opportunities

FMG representatives mentioned that a limited number of seats are available for FMGs to pursue mandatory internships. They requested NMC to allow internships at various teaching and non-teaching hospitals for FMGs.

Concern 2: Stipend for FMG Interns

The FMG association also requested NMC to provide a stipend to FMG interns. the Supreme Court also said that the FMGs cannot be treated differently and should be paid stipends during their internship.

Concern 3: Reconsider the 3-Year Internship Rule

FMG also discussed with NMC regarding the 3-year internship rule and requested them to analyse the advantages as well as the disadvantages of the same. Medical graduates from abroad are against this extended internship rule as this will impact their academic goals and financial burdens on their families.
