FORDA writes to LG J&K to suggest competitive exam for faculty hiring in GMCs
Selecting clinicians solely on the basis of theoretical performance will never be a good idea. A holistic and comparable selection methodology is needed for the recruitment of Registrars, Senior Residents and faculties in Jammu and Kashmir government medical colleges, said FORDA.
The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) has written to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and suggested a competitive exam for hiring faculties, Senior Residents, and Registrars of government medical colleges in the state.
The letter has highlighted the issues with a government order (Order no 282-JK (HME) of 2023) issued for the selection of Registrars and faculty in the government medical colleges of the J&K state.
As per the J&K GO, for the post of Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors, the academic qualifications required are, on a pro-rata basis with reference to marks in MBBS/BDS.
FORDA's letter reads, "The directive stipulates that 75% of the marks for Registrar/Demonstrator appointments in various disciplines shall be based solely on the candidate's MBBS marks. However, this approach fails to account for the significant disparity in the paper evaluation systems used by national and foreign medical colleges. While some foreign medical colleges have a grading system in place, many set different cut-offs for passing their students. Consequently, a system that subjects marks from different evaluation systems to compete under a single umbrella would be unjust and unethical."
The association has said that it would be a good idea to conduct a competitive exam in the form of MCQs to be instituted for these posts, which can then be followed up with an interview for the same.
