GMC Bhopal Students Plan Mass Suicide on May 31; Demands Healthy Working Environment

GMC Bhopal resident students shared a letter threatening the mass suicide of five residents on May 31, due to toxicity & torture making them depressed and mentally ill. FAIMA advised students to keep calm and assured students that necessary actions will be taken at the earliest.

Gandhi Medical College (GMC) Bhopal students have written to the Chairman of the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) regarding mass suicide planning of resident doctors due to extreme work pressure, toxicity and torture of the students.  The letter, however, does not mention any name or contact details of the students who wrote the letter.

Dr. Rohan Krishnan shared on X "We have received a very painful  letter from residents of Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal about the mass suicide of five residents planned on 31.05.24." He further requested the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and the Health Ministry of Madhya Pradesh to get in touch to solve this problem and assured the students that this issue would be resolved within twenty-four hours and their demands would be addressed. 

"We will be resolving this issue within twenty-four hours and do everything necessary to meet all three demands mentioned in the letter. A committee will be formed by this evening and a visit will be done by our representatives." Dr. Krishnan said.

In continuation, FAIMA assured students that necessary steps will be taken at the earliest and a committee will be formed to look into the issue and all their concerns will be resolved.

Students threatened that if the following points are not taken care of then five resident students will suicide in a single day on May 31, 2024. They have further said that this letter could be considered as their suicide note.

  • To stop the non-stop working of more than 24 hours (sometimes 36 hours).
  • To ensure healthy working environment
  • To stop the toxicity and abuse at the premises.
