In an order issued by TN health department on Tuesday, it was stated that Dr. Sangumani was regularly promoted and appointed as Director of Medical Education.

GMC Virudhunagar's Dean appointed as Tamil Nadu DME

Tamil Nadu Health Department has appointed the Dean of Government Virudhunagar Medical College, J. Sangumani, as the Director of Medical Education (DME). He was appointed after the post has been remained vacant for nearly two weeks.

Dr. Sangumani was regularly promoted and appointed as DME, added the health department order, as reported by The Hindu.

Dr. Sangumani was selected on the grounds of “merit and ability”, the order further added. Moreover, three medical officers who are senior to him — Dr. Balajinathan, Dr. Muthukrishnan and Dr. Murugesan — were appointed as Officers on Special Duty in the cadre of DME.

The health department also added that five eligible candidates were competing for this post which included R. Balajinathan, dean, Government Thanjavur Medical College; H. Muthukrishnan, dean, Government Ariyalur Medical College; R. Murugesan, dean, Government Tiruppur Medical College; J. Sangumani, dean, Government Virudhunagar Medical College; and R. Suganthy Rajakumari, dean, Government Dindigul Medical College.

J. Sangumani assumed the office of Dean of Virudhunagar Government Medical College in May 2021. He joined during the Covid period hence his first priority was to take care of patients and health care workers during the challenging times.

About GMC Virudhunagar

The Government Medical College, Virudhunagar started functioning from January 2022. College building was inaugurated by our Prime Minister of India on January 13, 2022. Sanction has been given for admission of 150 M.B.B.S students for every academic year by the National Medical Commission, New Delhi from the year 2021-2022.

In Virudhunagar Government Medical College, Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Community Medicine and Forensic Medicine departments are functioning. Laboratories are functioning in the departments of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Pathology. In Forensic Medicine Department, approximately 360 postmortems are performed every year.
