GMC Yavatmal: Surgery resident stabbed on duty; Docs demand strong HCW protection act

The medical fraternity has strongly condemned the attack on a surgery resident at GMC Yavatmal. The doctor was stabbed on duty.

GMC Yavatmal: Surgery resident stabbed on duty; Docs demand strong HCW protection act

As per reports, a General Surgery Resident at GMC Yavatmal was on evening rounds at around 7:30 pm when he was stabbed by a patient with a knife on the neck. Two residents got injured in this incident and one is reportedly critical. The medical associations demanded a safe work environment for doctors and a strong HCW (Health care Workers) Protection Act. The doctors have announced a strike against this violence.

FORDA INDIA tweet reads, "Surgery resident at GMC Yavatmal stabbed on duty in the neck. Two residents injured, one is critical. This disturbing incident highlights the urgent need for a HCW protection Act. They’ve announced strike- We lend them our full support. Our prayers for the injured."

Resident Doctors Association MAMC tweet says, "Our hearts go out to the surgery resident who was recently stabbed at GMC Yavatmal. We stand with you and offer our unwavering support and prayers. The safety and protection of healthcare workers is of the utmost importance, now more than ever."

IMA Maharashtra Chapter writes to CM, PM Modi about the incident

Indian Medical Association Junior Doctors Network Maharashtra Chapter has written to PM Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister about this incident.

The letter says, "We demand an establishment of police chowky in the area to stop such incidents in the future and a strong legal actionable against the offenders. In view of the protest, residents of SVNGMC Yavatmal will stop all emergency and non-emergency services. We urge you to take immediate appropriate action regarding this incident."
