Gujarat: NMC approves two private medical colleges

National Medical Commission (NMC) approved two private medical colleges in Kalol in Gandhinagar district. Both colleges will be affiliated with the Gujarat University.

As per the TOI report, the two colleges will have 150 seats each. It will add a total of 300 seats to the 6,400 medical seats available for this year. After these approvals, the seat numbers are expected to increase this year.

The state is upgrading its healthcare infrastructure. Gujarat Health Minister Rusikesh Patel had said recently that by the end of this year, a total of 43 medical colleges will be operational in the state, through which the state will get 7,000 new doctors every year.

While answering a question on the establishment of new medical colleges, in March 2023, union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that out of 58 new medical colleges to be established in the first phase, five will be established in Gujarat in Narmada, Navsari, Panchmahal, Porbandar and Morbi districts.

There is also another side to the story, many posts are vacant in the GMCs of the state. In March 2023, the state health minister said that out of the total of 14, 403 sanctioned posts, 1974 were lying vacant at five state-run medical colleges, four major civil hospitals, five physiotherapy colleges and two dental colleges in the state, as of December 2022. Out of 438 total sanctioned posts at two dental colleges in Ahmedabad and Jamnagar, 82 posts were found to be vacant in these colleges as well.
