While answering a question on the establishment of new medical colleges, union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that there will be 58 new medical colleges that will be established in phase one and 24 in the second phase of the centrally sponsored scheme for the establishment of new medical colleges attached to existing district or referral hospitals. The health minister said that these also include five new medical colleges in Gujarat including at Narmada, Navsari, Porbandar, Panchmahal, and Morbi districts.

He said there were a total of 8,890 health and welfare centres in Gujarat as of January 31. Of these, 1470 are primary health centres, 7100 are sub-health centres and 320 are urban primary health centres, as reported by TOI.

The government data also showed that between 2019 and 2022, the number of district hospitals reduced to 20 from 22 and sub-divisional hospitals increased from 37 to 54.

He said various initiatives are taken by the state government to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure. The state also provides telemedicine and e-Sanjeevani services in the state to help patients to get healthcare guidance from expert doctors at their doorstep.
