Kerala: Doctors, Medicos embrace Khadi overcoats
Khadi has found acceptance among health workers. In Kerala, the doctors, nurses, medical and paramedical students and others switched to overcoats manufactured by the Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Board. In June last year, NMC advised doctors to use a white coat made of Khadi due to its multiple benefits.
After the director of medical education issued a circular to principals of all government medical, dental and nursing colleges urging them to buy overcoats manufactured by the Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Board, the health workers including doctors, nurses, medical and paramedical students and others switching to Khadi overcoats by the Board. The fabric is known for its low carbon footprint.
As per the Indian Express report, Kannur, Thiruvananthapuram and Alappuzha medical colleges, besides several district and taluk hospitals, have implemented the move. Reportedly the newly admitted students of various medical, dental and paramedical colleges responded to the circular positively and incorporated the overcoats in their official attire.
Last year, National Medical Commission (NMC) advised doctors to use Khadi products in medical colleges and institutions. "Khadi & Village Industries Commission, a statutory establishment under Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, provides linkages with established marketing agencies in order to promote sale and marketing of Khadi and/or products of village industries or handicrafts. KVIC has also been providing financial assistance to institutions and individuals for development and operation of Khadi and Village Industries and generating employment for millions of people in rural areas," said the NMC's notification.
