Kerala PG Medicos to Go on Strike Against TCMC Decision to Deny Registrations
Over 200 doctors from Kerala who have completed their PG studies have planned to protest against TCMC's decision to deny their registration, under the aegis of the Kerala Medical Post Graduates Association (KMPGA).
Travancore-Cochin Medical Council (TCMC) has denied registrations of around 200 PG medical students from Kerala. The council made this decision as a consequence of courses which are not registered with the Medical Council of India (MCI), now the National Medical Commission (NMC).
Consequently, PG medical students, even after completing their course, will be considered MBBS-qualified doctors.
Doctors Demand Government’s Intervention
Due to this terrible agony, Kerala doctors have decided to protest against this decision under the aegis of the Kerala Medical Post Graduate Association (KMPGA). Further, the doctors demand the government to intervene in this regard and take necessary steps for the sake of students. Note that, Registration from the National Medical Council is necessary for doctors willing to join super speciality courses, seek jobs or pursue further studies.
Dr Jathin, on this matter, said " "An estimated 600 doctors, who completed PG in the last three years, are still waiting for a TCMC registration. This cannot be justified." As reported by The New Indian Express.
KMPGA to Agitate
"The issue is not new and has been around for quite some time. If the government does not take any step, then the KMPGA would be forced to agitate." Dr Jathin further informed.
Furthermore, he said that some seats in the same department have been recognised by NMC, and refused to recognise others. For instance, 10 out of 14 seats at Kottayam Medical College are recognised while the remaining four are not recognised. Consequently, all PG doctors in the respective department have been denied the TCMC registration", as reported by Medical Dialogues.
"The MCI permitted the government to concede students in the PG programme on the stake that it would manage the problems required to be recognised. However, the government did not sustain its end of the deal, which resulted in PG seats being unauthorised by MCI. This is not where doctors are at fault, government should have taken the approval beforehand" Dr Jathin further added.
Meanwhile, a member of Tranvancore-Cochin Medical Council, Dr Sreejith N Kumar, said that the council had written to the state government and NMC asking about the steps required for registration.
