Kota: NEET aspirant commits suicide; 26th case this year

Another case of suicide has been reported in the Vigyan Nagar area, Kota where a 17-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh died by allegedly consuming poison; this is the 26th case of suicide in Kota this year and the second case in the last week.

As per the initial probe, the reason behind her suicide is still not known as no suicide note has been found. The deceased student is from the Mau area of Uttar Pradesh (UP).

The Additional Superintendent of Police Bhagwat Singh Hinger said that the aspirant consumed poison and her body has been sent for post-mortem. DSP Dharmveer Singh has said that the aspirant was a Class 12 student who was preparing for NEET-UG at a coaching institute in Kota, as reported by India.com.

This year has witnessed the most student suicides, with 26 so far. Last year, the figure was 15.

The government is also trying to stop these tragic suicides by youngsters by recommending mandatory installation of anti-hanging devices in ceiling fans. Kota Hostel Association has been encouraging the installation of anti-hanging devices since 2017, and the district administration has finally enforced it this year.

As per Business Today news, the Kota police department is also recruiting wardens, mess employees, and tiffin service providers to monitor for signs of depression or stress among students staying in hostels and PGs.

While wardens are encouraged to actively participate in the "darwaze pe dastak" (knock on door) campaign, the Kota police have directed mess workers and tiffin providers to report if a student is repeatedly absent from the mess and skips meals, or if anyone's tiffin is found unconsumed, according to the report.
