Maharashtra doctors reiterate demand for timely stipend; Threatens strike from February 7

Maharashtra doctors have once again raised their longstanding demands regarding hostel accommodation and regularisation of stipends. The resident doctors across the state's medical colleges have threatened to go on a pan- pan-Maharashtra strike starting on February 7, 2024, if their demands are not met.

Central Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) highlighted earlier also that there are less than 50% of seats available in the hostels of government medical colleges and these too are located in remote locations. Hence, the demand is to construct more medical hostels for doctors. The demand is also to increase the salary of doctors as par with other states.

As per TOI report, MARD said on Wednesday that they have written 28 letters to the medical education department and minister Hasan Musrif regarding their demands but they have only received "dry verbal assurances."

"Across all the medical colleges, residents are never paid their stipends on time. Non payment of stipend for multiple months is inhuman treatment that resident doctors face every month. Whenever the stipend is disbursed, it is done in a highly irregular manner, leading to financial insecurity among the doctors," said the MARD statement.

One month back also doctors had warned the government to go on a strike.

“After a one-and-half-year-long inconvenience and hardship faced by patients, the HMIS will be made operational in all 25 government medical colleges and hospitals of the state with an installation of the latest 'Next Gen e-Hospital' system. Training has been provided to staff for operating the new system,” said a senior official from the state health department, as reported by Free Press Journal.
