Medical Education in Karnataka

MBBS Fee in Karnataka has become costlier as the state government has announced a 10 per cent increase in the undergraduate medical course fee. The fee hike of 10% has been ratified for private medical colleges for the academic session 2024-25. Consequently, the MBBS fee in Karnataka has been increased from INR 9,94,906 to INR 11,88,161 for the academic session 2024-25. Meanwhile, the Karnataka government college MBBS fees for the academic session 2024-25 remain unchanged i.e. INR 50,000 per year.

Reportedly, the private medical and dental colleges demanded an increase of 15 to 20% fee hike owing to increasing operational costs faced by the private medical institutes
but the government proposed and ratified to increase the MBBS fees in Karnataka by 10%. Private medical and dental colleges belonging to minority communities earlier agreed with a 10% hike while the remaining colleges refused for a 10% increase. But now, the remaining private medical colleges in Karnataka have settled with a 10% MBBS fee hike decision of the government.

Shiksha has earlier reported that the government has decided not to increase the MBBS course fees for the academic year 2024-25. The government has decided that the MBBS fee in government medical colleges would continue to be INR 50,000 per year while INR 1,28,746 shall be charged for the government quota seat in private medical colleges in 2024-25.

The increase in medical course fees in Karnataka was decided after the private medical colleges cited the increased cost of maintenance, staff salaries and other expenses. The increase in fees would help private medical colleges cope with their financial burdens, as reported by TOI.
