MBBS students undergoing internship in Maharashtra private medical college will be paid an INR 18,000 stipend per month, as directed by the State Directorate of Medical Education and Research.

MBBS Stipend in Maharashtra

The State Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has issued directions to pay INR 18,000 as a stipend to MBBS students undergoing internships at private medical colleges in the state of Maharashtra. Besides, DMER has asked Maharashtra private medical colleges to submit a detailed report concerning stipends paid to MBBS students in their respective institutions.

The state issued a direction owing to the allegations submitted by guardians of medical students claiming that apart from one of two medical colleges, all the private medical colleges in Maharashtra do not pay an 'Equitable amount' of stipends to the MBBS students, as reported by TOI.

The MBBS graduates in India have to complete a one-year MBBS internship in order to get their degrees and practice in India. For the said internship period, the medical students receive a stipend from the medical institutes or the state government authorities subject to the institute type.

Besides, NMC norms state that the intern doctors shall be paid stipends as decided by the fee fixation authority applicable to the respective state. Hence, the chances of getting a stipend for their internship period depend on the concerned parent institutions or the state authorities.

At the latest turn of events, Maharashtra state has fixed the amount of stipend in the state following a resolution to increase the amount of stipend for interns from INR 11,000 to INR 18,000 per month for their internship period.
