Medical Students Appeal Health Ministry to Grant One Additional Attempt for MBBS 2021 Batch
AIMSA has requested the Ministry to also grant an additional attempt to the MBBS 2021 batch arguing becoming a competent physician requires immense dedication and hard work.
Medical students have written to the Union Health Ministry to grant one additional attempt for the MBBS 2021 batch. With an urge to reassess the regulation, the All India Medical Students' Association (AIMSA) made a plea to the Union Health Ministry to allow students an additional opportunity to appear for the first MBBS exam.
Reason Behind Appeal
The National Medical Commission (NMC) allows four attempts to clear the first professional examination as per the current rule. However, the MBBS batches of 2019 and 2020 were given an additional attempt to clear the MBBS first exam due to COVID-19. Consequently, AIMSA has requested the Ministry to also grant an additional attempt to the MBBS 2021 batch.
AIMSA wrote to the Union Health Ministry that MBBS is among the top courses students are willing to pursue and argued that becoming a doctor requires immense dedication and hard work, as reported by Medical Dialogues.
"Nevertheless, the exiting rule places excessive strain on first-year MBBS students, who might already be grappling with the challenging transition from high school to college life. Moreover, this constraint on the number of attempts for the first-year examination could have detrimental effects on studies, and mental wellness failing to pass the exam within the allotted number of attempts may lead to anxiety, depression and other psychological distress among students" AIMSA added.
AIMSA further pointed out that as the batch 2021 applicants are required to complete the exam by Aug-Sep 2024, they will be close to the four-attempt regulation of NMC. Presumably making applicants leave the MBBS course altogether.
"Considering these concerns as 2019 and 2020 batches granted extra attempt same as batch 2021 consider as the same situation and give one more chance to attempt exam (these all batches 2019,2020,2021 are covid affected batches)," AIMSA added in the letter.
