Medical Students on Strike; FORDA Calls for Protest Demanding Justice for Victim in RG Kar Medical College Case

Medical Students across India have come out on the streets demanding justice for the PG medical student who was brutally assaulted and murdered in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College. The police have arrested the prime suspect, Sanjay Roy.

The latest turn of events at the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case is a nationwide protest of medical doctors seeking justice for the PG medical student who was brutally assaulted by the alleged accused, Sanjay Roy. The police have arrested the culprit who is not directly linked to the hospital but used to visit the premises frequently. 

RG Kar Medical College MS Removed

Dr Sanjay Vashisth, medical supritendent-cum-vice principal of RG Kar Medical College has been suspended from his position following the removal order by the West Bengal health department. He has been reassigned as a professor at the National Medical College & hospital. 

Police Arrested Prime Suspect 

Sanjay Roy, prime suspect and accused in the Kolkata doctor rape and murder case has been arrested by the WB police. Reportedly, the culprit went back to his home after allegedly committing the brutal crime and slept for a few hours. Later, he washed his clothes to destroy the evidence. However, the police found blood on the shoes of the accused who is a civic volunteer, as reported by Hindustan Times. 

FORDA Announce Nationwide Strike

The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association India (FORDA) has announced a nationwide strike and halting of elective service in hospitals in solidarity with RG Kar Medical College Resident. The association announces halting of elective services in hospitals starting Monday, August 12, 2024. The decision has been made to ensure that our voices are heard and the demands for justice and safety are met without further delay." the notice reads.

BMC Suspends Elective, Non-Emergency Medical Services

In a decisive display of outrage and solidarity, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors has announced the suspension of resident doctors' elective/non-emergency medical services from 8 am on August 13 till the acceptance of demands of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College residents.

Medical Colleges Declared ‘cease-work’

The RDAs of several major hospitals, including UCMS & GTBH, VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, ABVIMS & Dr. RML Hospital, DDU, IHBS, and NITRD and other medical institutes have issued statements expressing their outrage and demanding justice. 

“After the call from @FordaIndia, All 10 Government Hospitals’ RDA of Delhi are on strike from today. Resident Doctors of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Jammu are also on strike from today. All other state RDAs will join by today,” as reported by News18.
