“Indian students are bridges between cultures,” says Moldova’s Deputy PM as nation plans to expand scholarships and academic collaborations.

India’s growing presence in Moldova’s educational landscape took center stage during the inauguration of the Embassy of Moldova in New Delhi on December 15, 2024. Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister Mihail Popsoi highlighted the increasing number of Indian students—now around 2,000—and announced plans to expand scholarships, foster academic exchanges, and strengthen bilateral ties in education.

Speaking at the event, Popsoi lauded the Indian student community as “bridges between cultures” and underscored Moldova’s commitment to building deeper collaborations. "We launched our first scholarship program for Indian students this year, and we aim to increase these opportunities further while promoting joint academic projects and faculty exchanges,” he said.

A Growing Academic Partnership

The past year has seen notable developments in India-Moldova academic ties. A milestone was achieved with the first official visit by a Moldovan Minister of Education in 32 years. The visit laid the groundwork for initiatives such as increasing scholarship allocations and developing people-to-people connections through higher education.

Popsoi acknowledged the cultural contributions of Indian students and thanked India for its collaboration in multiple sectors, including energy, trade, and technology.

India’s Gratitude for Moldova’s Role During Crisis

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar expressed appreciation for Moldova’s support during “Operation Ganga,” which facilitated the evacuation of stranded Indian students during the Ukraine crisis.

“Moldova provided critical assistance during one of our greatest challenges. Today, it’s heartening to see this partnership flourish with over 2,000 Indian students making Moldova their second home,” Dr. Jaishankar remarked.

Expanding Opportunities Beyond Education

The event also saw the signing of several agreements to deepen cooperation. Moldova joined the International Solar Alliance and signed an Immigration Mobility Partnership to enable safe and legal movement of skilled professionals. Bilateral trade initiatives, including the introduction of Moldovan fruits and wines to Indian markets, were also discussed.

The education sector, however, remains the centerpiece of the growing relationship, with both nations emphasizing mutual respect, shared values, and the transformative potential of academic collaborations.
