NMC will submit suggestions and recommendations to reduce the mental stress of medical students before the Union Health Ministry for grievance redressal.

Stressed Medical Student

The Anti-Ragging Committee of the National Medical Commission (NMC) set up a National Task Force in order to address the mental health of medical students in India. Consequently, surprising data concerning the mental health of medical students has come up in response to the NMC survey. The government authority has received more than 37,000 applications from medical students indicating they are suffering from mental stress.

Consequently, the authorities have prescribed several measures to reduce the workload and duty hours to reduce the stress of the medical students. The suggestions and recommendations to reduce mental stress will be submitted by the National Medical Commission (NMC) before the Union Health Ministry for grievance redressal.

We have received more than 37,000 applications from medical students and faculty which itself indicates that doctors are suffering from mental stress. Most of the students face problems in hostels, and during ragging, which we are streamlining. Our education system for primary and secondary classes is reformed, but there is no work regulation for higher education. For PG students, we have directed states to relax seat leaving bond policy of the state government." A government official told PTI.

NMC Data on Mental Stress of Medicos

As per the NMC data, 153 MBBS and 1120 PG medical students left their academics in between due to stress, ragging and unpleasant behaviour. Further, over 60 MBBS and PG medical students died by suicide during the last five years, as reported by Medical Dialogues.

NMC has suggested several measures to reduce the workload and regulate duty hours for PG medical students. The commission has also suggested offering better facilities, a friendly working environment and timely counselling for medical students.
