Nagaland gets NMC's approval for its first medical college with 100 MBBS seats

After 60 years of becoming a state, Nagaland has got approval for its first medical college with 100 MBBS seats from the academic session 2023-24. It is “a great and historic day” for the people of the northeastern state, said Health and Family Welfare Minister P Paiwang Konyak.

National Medical Commission approved 100 MBBS seats at Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Kohima. With this nod, the state has got its first medical college after 60 years of becoming a state.

Health and Family Welfare Minister P Paiwang Konyak announced the approval on Wednesday and said that the academic session of the new medical college would begin from 2023-24.

"We received the approval for a 100 seat (MBBS) medical college from the NMC, Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) on Tuesday," Konyak told the media.

Of the 100 MBBS seats, 85 would be for students of Nagaland while the remaining 15 will be reserved for aspirants from other states, as reported by Deccan Herald.

The state government will send the acceptance letter within a week to enable the MARB to issue the Letter of Permission for the academic year 2023-24, he added.

It is "a great and historic day" for the people of the northeastern, the minister said.

The Health and Family Welfare Commissioner and Secretary Y Kikheto Sema told the press conference that the session will start by June - July this year.

Recently, the UNICEF team led by Dr Madhulika Jonathan, Chief of UNICEF Assam and North East in India, called upon the Health Minister of Nagaland and discussed various health indicators and the continued UNICEF technical support to the State. SPO RCH Dr Khelito was also present during the occasion.
