NEET 2024 Result Controversy: NTA Answers FAQs Regarding Multiple Toppers, Grace Marks and Paper Leak

NEET 2024 result controversy is still a major matter of discussion among the students and stakeholders. Several concerns have been raised regarding the result declared on June 4, 2024. Despite multiple clarifications by NTA, some questions are still unanswered. NTA has released a list of FAQs on NEET 2024 result to answer these questions.

While one week has passed since the NEET 2024 result declaration, the controversies around it are still not doused. The National Testing Agency (NTA), the exam conducting body has released statements and conducted a press conference addressing the concern areas. Several PILs have been filed across the country, including the Supreme Court of India.

In the latest step taken by NTA to clear its stand, the exam authorities have answered several Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to clarify concerns and doubts on the NEET 2024 result controversy.

NEET 2024 Result FAQs Answered by NTA

Q: Did the candidates get any opportunity to view their NEET 2024 OMR Answer Sheet?

A: Yes, the scanned OMR Answer Sheet which was submitted by the candidate at the Centre was shown from 29 May 2024 to 01 June 2024 (up to 11:00 A.M.) for the candidates.  As an additional measure, a scanned copy of the OMR Answer Sheet submitted by the candidates at their respective Centres was sent to their registered e-mail addresses.

Q: What was the role of the Grievance Redressal Committee in giving the NEET 2024 grace marks or Compensatory marks for time loss and why was it done?  

A: Few Writ Petitions were filed by the candidates of NEET (UG) - 2024 before the Hon’ble High Courts for loss of exam time in the NEET (UG) - 2024 exam at few Centres.  Accordingly, a Grievance Redressal Committee was formed which considered the grievances/representations based on factual reports of the functionaries and CCTV footage from concerned exam Centres. To compensate for the loss of time, such candidates were compensated with compensatory marks.

Q: How were the NEET 2024 grace marks or Compensatory marks calculated?

A: The loss of examination time was ascertained and such candidates were compensated with marks based on their answering efficiency and time lost, as per the mechanism/ formula established by the Hon’ble Apex Court, vide its judgment dated 13.06.2018 in W.P. 551 of 2018. 1563 candidates were compensated for the loss of time.

Q: How can any candidate score 718 and 719 marks in the NEET UG 2024?

A: Due to the compensatory marks, two candidates happened to secure 718 and 719 marks. 

Q: Were there any NEET 2024 candidates besides the 1563 who received compensatory marks?

A: No, compensatory marks were awarded exclusively to those 1563 candidates to make up for their loss of time in NEET 2024.

Q: Did the 44 perfect scorers (720/720), who benefited from the Physics question with two correct answers, also receive compensatory or grace marks in NEET 2024?

A: No, as previously stated, compensatory marks were solely given to address the loss of time.

Q: Why the NEET 2024 Answer Key was changed from one correct option to multiple correct options for a Physics Question?

A: To evaluate candidates' understanding of nuclear composition and related changes, a specific question was designed for NEET UG 2024 using the NCERT Physics Textbook for Class 12 (Part II). The question included Statement II: "Atoms of most of the elements are stable and emit their characteristic spectrum," making option (Statement I correct, Statement II incorrect) the initially correct answer.

Upon receiving 27,020 answer key challenges, including 13,373 for this question, experts reviewed the ambiguity due to differences in the old and new editions of the NCERT textbook. Based on expert opinion, the answer key was updated to reflect that Statement II should be: "Atoms of each element are stable and emit their characteristic spectrum," as per the old textbook. Consequently, two options were considered correct.  This was also done as a policy mentioned in the Information Bulletin of the NEET (UG) – 2024 i.e. “If more than one option is found to be correct then Four marks (+4) will be awarded to only those who have marked any of the correct options”.

Q: Are CCTV cameras installed in every examination room, and what is their purpose?

A: YES, every room has a CCTV camera installed. They are used for monitoring throughout the test as well as for post-examination video evaluation to look for malpractice and cheating. Candidates found engaging in malpractice, even after the exam, are subject to punitive action.

Q: What measures were taken by NTA to prevent malpractices during the exam?

A: To prevent cheating, CCTV cameras were installed in all examination halls. Biometric verification was done for the candidates. Conducted thorough frisking at entry points. Used the latest jammers to block electronic communication devices.

Q: What action NTA is taking on unfair mean cases?

A: A Committee was constituted consisting of three eminent experts in the field of examination and academics to put forward the different types of issues reported such as Impersonation, cheating, Unfair means cases, and Tampered OMR. The committee went through the relevant issues and prepared a list of actions proposed by the committee. The total number of Unfair means cases in NEET (UG) - 2024 was 63. 

On the recommendation of the Committee, a total of 12 candidates were debarred from the NEET UG 2024 for three years, nine candidates for two years, and one candidate for one year. 32 candidates were given the status of NEET 2024 Result later till a detailed report was received. The Committee had given its recommendation against each case.  Action taken in UFM cases is in accordance with existing rules, including the cancellation of candidature and debarment from future examinations of NTA. NTA has also registered cases against impersonators and some cases have been registered by the State Police.

Q: Why did a greater number of candidates get full marks in the NEET UG 2024?

A: The number of candidates who appeared in 2023 was 20,38,596, while the number of candidates who appeared in 2024 increased to 23,33,297. The increase in candidates naturally led to an increase in high scorers due to a larger pool of candidates. 

The NTA received 13,373 challenges to the provisional answer key of one question in Physics. Due to the differences in the old and new editions of the NCERT textbook, the Subject Expert(s) held that two options be taken as correct in place of one option for this Question. 

Out of the 67 candidates who got 720/720 marks, 44 are on account of the revision in one Answer Key of Physics, and 06 are on account of compensatory marks for loss of time.  

This revision led to increased marks for many candidates, contributing to the high number of perfect scores. This led to getting the full marks for 44 candidates in the NEET (UG) – 2024. This adjustment aimed to address inconsistencies in NCERT textbooks, ensuring candidates were not disadvantaged by factual discrepancies.

It is pertinent to mention that the toppers are from across the country, as highlighted in the Press Release dated June 4, 2024.

Q: Can you provide details about the distribution of the top 100 candidates of NEET (UG) - 2024 in terms of their exam centres and school boards?

A: The top 100 candidates are distributed across 89 different centres located in 55 cities within 17 States/UTs of the country.   Out of these top candidates, 73 belong to the CBSE Board, while the remaining 27 are from various State Boards. This diverse distribution highlights the widespread participation and competitive spirit among students from different regions and educational backgrounds.

Q: How does NTA ensure the authenticity of such high scores?

A: The NTA took several measures to maintain the integrity of the exam. This includes biometric verification, CCTV surveillance, and strict invigilation during the examination.  

Post-exam, NTA conducted a thorough analysis, including a review of CCTV footage and academic background checks of top scorers of the NEET UG 2024.

Q: Is it true that there has been a NEET 2024 question paper leak in Bihar or Godhra? 

A: It is to be noted that none of the reports are backed with evidence that may indicate a paper leak. These cases seem to be related to cheating/impersonation and not to paper leaks. While the outcome of the investigation in aforesaid cases is awaited, NTA has categorically denied any case of paper leak.

Further, NTA has its own Security Protocols and Standard Operating Procedures, it has been found that all Question Papers which have been printed have been accounted for, and there is no question of Paper Leak. 

NTA has recently received communication from Patna Police regarding the requirement of documents concerning certain candidates. All relevant information and documents have been proactively provided to them. NTA remains committed to fully supporting and assisting all investigations and law enforcement agencies involved in this matter.

Q: What happened at a NEET 2024 Centre at Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan?

A: At one of the NEET 2024 Examination Centres, i.e. Girl’s Higher Secondary Model School, Mandir, Mantown, Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, there was an incident of incorrect distribution of NEET 2024 Question Papers (QPs). It was found that the Centre Superintendent had mistakenly distributed QPs intended for Hindi medium candidates to those taking the English medium exam, and vice versa. This led to agitation by some candidates, who left the examination center with question papers, despite efforts by the Centre Staff to prevent them from doing the same.

It was also found that copies of this Question Paper were circulated on social media at around 4.25 P.M., creating an impression that QP was leaked before the commencement of the examination. It is to emphasize that, even though the QP was taken out by some students and circulated on the Internet, there is no way any external person/agency could access the centres, once the examination started. Moreover, all Centres were under CCTV surveillance.

The examination of affected candidates of the aforementioned Centre at Sawai Madhopur was conducted on the same day, i.e. 05 May 2024 with the correct medium Question Paper, ensuring that their academic aspirations were not hindered by this incident.

Q: Have there been instances of NEET 2024 paper solver gangs who have impersonated the examinees in return for some lakhs of rupees?

A: The NTA is actively engaged with all relevant stakeholders to gather detailed information and evidence related to the alleged malpractices. Any individuals or entities found involved in such activities will be subjected to strict disciplinary action as per law.

NTA has registered cases against impersonators and some cases have been registered by the State Police. NTA has been extending support, wherever required, to the agencies investigating cases pertaining to NEET UG 2024. 

Q: Why was the NEET UG 2024 result declared on June 4, 2024 however the result declaration date mentioned in the Information Bulletin was June 14, 2024.

A: As a policy of the NTA, the result of all NTA examinations including NEET UG 2024 is declared after the Answer Key challenge period. As per our established practice, the timing of the result declaration aligns with our commitment to providing timely results as recommended by the National Medical Commission (NMC) to facilitate prompt counselling and admissions. The result date was pre-scheduled and is not connected to the general election results. The early announcement aims to expedite the counselling and admission process for the benefit of all candidates. 

It is important to note that NTA consistently declares examination results within a month, whether conducted in CBT mode or offline mode.

Q: How does the NTA address the issue of candidates forging their NEET 2024 scorecards and/or OMR answer sheets and claiming that the NTA has released incorrect results?

A: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has become aware of instances where candidates are forging their NEET 2024 scorecards and/or OMR answer sheets, claiming that NTA has released incorrect results. The NTA wants to clarify that any manipulation or tampering with the OMR answer sheet at any stage is strictly prohibited.

As stated in the NEET (UG) information bulletin, tampering with the OMR answer sheet will result in the candidate being debarred from the examination for three years. Additionally, making fake claims by manipulating the responses in the OMR sheet, or tampering with it in any way whatsoever, either before or after the declaration of results, is a serious offense. 

The NTA ensures the accuracy and integrity of all scorecards and OMR answer sheets, and any official documents should only be downloaded from the official NTA website.

Candidates are advised to refrain from any such malpractices as strict action will be taken against those found guilty. 

Q: What is the NTA's response to a viral video alleging discrepancies in NEET 2024 scoring and the receipt of a torn OMR Answer Sheet via email?

A: Regarding the viral video featuring a candidate of the NEET (UG) - 2024, claiming discrepancies in NEET (UG) - 2024 scoring and receiving of the torn OMR Answer Sheet, NTA clarifies that no torn OMR Answer Sheet was sent via an official NTA ID. OMR Answer Sheet is intact and Scores are accurate as per official records. Candidates should download Scorecards only from the official website.

Q: Is it true that another committee has been formed to look into the cases of compensatory marks given by the NTA against loss of time during NEET UG 2024?

A: Yes, it is true. A High-Powered Committee has been formed to revisit the cases of those candidates (approximately 1563) who were awarded compensatory marks to address the issue of time loss during the NEET (UG) - 2024 examination. The committee will thoroughly review these cases to ensure fairness and transparency in the evaluation process.
