NEET aspirant hangs herself to death, family suspects foul play
The victim was a student of Sri Guru Ram Das Medical College in Amritsar. Her mother alleged she was upset over casteist remarks being passed by college teachers.
A NEET aspirant allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her hostel room at Sri Guru Ram Das Medical College in Amritsar. The college is managed by a trust under the patronage of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the police said.
The police said they have registered a case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the head of department (gynaecology) Dr Pratibha, Dr Bir Davinder Singh, Gagandeep Kaur, Dr Prabhhimmat, Priyanka, Namisha, Karanbir Singh, professor Swati, Jimmy and Dr Piyush.
The deceased was a resident of Jalandhar. In her complaint to the police, the mother of the deceased said, “My daughter was upset over casteist remarks being passed by college teachers. She often used to say that they would not let her become a doctor. On Thursday, when she was not answering our calls, we rushed to her hostel and found her hanging from the ceiling fan.”
As soon as the news went viral, netizens started flooding Twitter with comments. One wrote, “Very unfortunate news from Amritsar, Panjab. A 25 yr old Dalit Girl – doing her MBBS internship at Guru Ramdas College committed suicide due to caste discrimination from colleagues & profs. She was directly subjected to caste slurs. NOT JUST CASTE ISSUE, THIS IS AGAINST SIKHI,” while another tweeted, “A 25-year-old dalit girl from amritsar,punjab named "Pompesh" doing her MBBS internship at Guru Ramdas College committed suicide after being fed up of caste discrimination, casteist slurs from her colleagues & professors. Mother complained twice to college but no action was taken.”
