NMC again warns medical colleges against forcing students to stay in expensive hostels

The National Medical Commission has said that despite the recent notification regarding the hostel accommodation for postgraduate medical students, the students are still facing these issues. The earlier notification said that the students can not be compelled to stay in the hostels offered by the medical colleges. Now, the Commission has said that despite the clear directive, NMC has received numerous complaints from postgraduate students alleging that they are being forced by medical colleges/institutions to stay in the designated hostels, accompanied by hefty charges.

"In response to these grievances, the NMC directs all medical colleges and institutes to adhere strictly to the stipulations outlined in the aforementioned Regulation. Failure to comply may result in punitive actions including monetary penalties, reduction of seats, or suspension of admissions, as outlined in Regulations 9.1 and 9.2 of the PGIMER 2023," reads NMC's statement.

As per Regulation 5.6 of the Post Graduate Medical Education Regulation (PGIMER) 2023, it is mandatory for medical colleges to provide suitable residential accommodation to postgraduate students. However, it is not obligatory for students to reside in these hostels.

Earlier FORDA India said on X, "Medical colleges can’t compel resident doctors to stay in Hostels. A welcome move by @NMC_IND Many private colleges charge exorbitant fees in the name of Hostel accommodation. Similarly, many government colleges have poor hostels, not justified by the HRA they deduct."
