NMC de-recognises 40 medical colleges; 100 more institutes on radar

National Medical Commission (NMC) has derecognised 40 medical colleges after it was found that they were not following the standard norms set by the commission.
As per media reports, 100 more medical colleges are going to face similar actions. The agency cited sources and said the colleges that may lose recognition are located in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Assam, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, and West Bengal, as reported by The Indian Awaaz.
In the 40 medical colleges that are now derecognised, NMC found lapses related to Aadhaar-linked biometric attendance procedures, CCTV cameras, and faculty rolls during the inspection. A majority of these colleges are in Puducherry, Gujarat, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Tripura, West Bengal, and Assam, a college in Arunachal Pradesh that was over a century old also lost recognition, along with Tamil Nadu’s reputed Stanley Medical College.
This came at a time when the government is on a spree to increase the number of medical colleges and seats in India. MoS Health Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar had informed the Rajya Sabha that since 2014, the total number of medical colleges in the country increased by 69% and the country has witnessed an increase in the 94% in MBBS seats.
In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, Dr Pawar said that MBBS seats have also gone up from 51 thousand 348 before 2014 to 96 thousand 77 as of now, registering a growth of 87 per cent. While the PG seats increased by 105 per cent from 31 thousand 185 before 2014 to 64 thousand 59 as of now, she added.
The Minister further informed the government is implementing the Central Sector Scheme for the establishment of a new medical college by upgrading the district and referral hospital and under it 94 new medical colleges are already functional out of 157 approved.
