NMC issues advisory for Indian students seeking admission to foreign medical institutes

National Medical Commission has issued an advisory for Indian students who are seeking admission to foreign institutes/universities for undergraduate medical courses.

"It has been observed that the institutes or universities abroad are following the curriculum, time frame and training imparted to the students who are not in consonance with NMC regulations being followed in India. Therefore, all students who are desirous to obtain the medical qualification from any foreign medical colleges or universities and thereafter practice allopathy in India are hereby advised to ensure that all conditions prescribed in FMGL are fulfilled before taking admission," reads the notification.

"Any variation in duration, medium of instructions, syllabus, clinical training or internship/clerkship may lead to disqualification in grant of registration in India. In case of disqualification, the sole responsibility shall lie upon the candidate only," added the notification.

National Medical Commission published Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiates (FMGL) Regulations 2021 in the official gazette of India vide notification dated November 18, 2021 wherein the terms of duration of the study, medium of instructions, syllabus, clinical training or internship/clerkship etc are prescribed. These conditions are mandatory for registration to practice allopathy in India.

Of late, Indian students who were pursuing medical courses from foreign universities faced so many issues, especially those who returned from Ukraine and China due to the Russia-Ukraine war and Covid-19. When they tried to complete their remaining courses in India as one-time measure, it was said many times that their foreign universities are not matching the standards of Indian medical colleges.
