NMC proposes two-year internship after clearing FMGE for medicos returned from Ukraine, China

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has proposed to the Health Ministry to allow final-year Indian medical students from Ukraine and China to clear FMGE and complete two years of internship.

After the Supreme Court directed the National Medical Commission (NMC) to frame a policy to accommodate the Indian medical students who returned from Ukraine and China due to war and pandemic respectively, NMC has proposed to the Health Ministry that the final year medical students who returned from Ukraine and China can complete their education from their parent universities through online and then take the Foreign Medical Graduate Exam (FMGE) here.

As per the official sources, the concession is being planned as a one-time measure. After clearing FMGE, these students will be allowed to do an internship in accordance with Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) regulations for two years instead of one year, the NMC said in its proposal, as reported by Business Today.

If implemented, it can bring relief to final-year students from Ukraine and China

Nearly, 40,000 Indian medical students have returned from Ukraine and China, if the proposal gets implemented, it can benefit the final year students.

The two-year internship period is proposed to overcome the deficit in clinical and practical skills training. However, the first and second-year students are not likely to get any relief from NMC. As per the sources, the Under-Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) has suggested that they must appear for the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) exam for admission to a college in India according to their merit. If the students are not willing to appear for NEET then they can also go to other foreign countries to finish their studies.

''CIS countries such as Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Romania have already shown their willingness to allow the continuation of studies for the candidates affected by the global crisis in their countries,'' the source said.
