NMC provides Mercy Attempt to Covid affected MBBS students of AY 2020-2021

National Medical Commission Under Graduate Medical Education Board has issued a public notice on providing additional attempt (mercy attempt) to MBBS students of the first professional examination for the academic year 2020-2021. The Commission has decided to allow one additional attempt for these MBBS students who were admitted to medical colleges during the academic year 2020-21.
"National Medical Commission decided to allow one additional attempt (5th attempt) to such MBBS Students who were admitted in medical colleges during the academic year 2020-21 and could not pass their first professional MBBS examination, as this batch was also affected by COVID 19 Pandemics," reads NMC's statement.
This shall be a one-time measure and may not be treated as a precedence for future, added NMC.
The Commission has also released Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) who returned from Ukraine during the Russia and Ukraine war. NMC said that these medical students can pursue their remaining education by migrating to any other country than India. Also, the migration period will expire on March 7, 2023. The commission has also clarified on multiple questions related to Ukraine's returned FMGs.

Nearly, half of the medical colleges have reportedly received show cause notices from NMC for non-compliance with the established standards, according to sources, as reported by India Today.
“If colleges will not rectify the error then admission in these colleges will be kept on hold for one year,” the sources said.
A total of 349 medical colleges, comprising 197 government-aided institutions and various private ones, have been served with show-cause notices.
