NMC Withdraws CBME 2024 Guidelines Amid Students Outrage Over Discrimination
NMC has cancelled the CBME guidelines 2024 after facing backlash for including controversial topics like sodomy and allegedly considering lesbianism as an unnatural offence.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has withdrawn its recently issued 'Guidelines under Competency-Based Medical Education Curriculum (CBME) 2024'. Further, the authorities have notified that the NMC CBME guidelines stand cancelled with immediate effect and the revised guidelines will be uploaded in due course on the official website.
"It is informed that the circular of even number dated August 31, 2024, thereby issuing guidelines under Competency-Based Medical Education Curriculum (CBME) 2024, stands “WITHDRAWN AND CANCELLED” with immediate effect. The above guidelines will be revised and uploaded in due course." The official notification reads.
NMC has released the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) Curriculum Guidelines 2024 in order to prepare the medicos with the necessary skills to provide healthcare to those in need. The guidelines were revised in 2023 and the latest revisions were updated considering the changing demography, perceptions, values, and socio-economic context to name a few. As a part of the guidelines, a longitudinal program titled ‘AETCOM’ based on Attitude, Ethics and Communication (AETCOM) competencies has been introduced.
CBME Faced Backlash From Stakeholders
Competency-Based Medical Education faced backlash from the stakeholders over the introduction of Sodomy and considering lesbianism as an unnatural sexual offence under the curriculum for UG medicos, as reported by Economic Times. Besides, topics such as hymen and its type, virginity and defloration, legitimacy and its medico-legal importance have been reintroduced despite the Madras High Court directive of revocation back in the year 2022.
