MBBS Seats in Karnataka

Karnataka is set to add 1,500 more MBBS seats following the approval of recommendations by the Local Inspection Committee (LIC) to expand seat capacity at eight private and 16 state-run medical colleges across the state. The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) has cleared these recommendations for the increase by clearing the recommendations given by the Local committee.

The University has proposed the addition of 1500+ MBBS seats at existing medical colleges. Additionally, RGUHS has approved the establishment of a new private medical college in Hunsur, Mysuru, as reported by the Deccan Herald.

Karnataka Ranks First in MBBS Seat Intake Nationwide

Karnataka has become the state with the maximum number of MBBS seats in the country. surpassing Tamil Nadu. Currently having 12,545 seats, Karnataka is likely to further enhance its medical education capacity with the addition of 1,500+ new medical seats in Karnataka. Apart from these potential seats, another 250 seats may also be added to the Karnataka MBBS seat matrix if the newly proposed government medical colleges in Ramanagara and Kanakapura start the intake of students in the 2025-2026 academic year.

However, stakeholders have condemned RGUHS's approval to increase the seat intake at certain medical colleges, as some of these medical colleges had previously been penalized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) because of insufficient infrastructure and faculty strength.

Reportedly, the increase of seat intake on such a scale of 1500 is in the final stage and yet to be approved hitherto. Besides, some of the former members of the syndicate have decided to highlight this issue before Karnataka Governor to look into the issue, as reported by Medical Dialogues.
