Panel Proposes Eliminating NEET; Suggested Plus 2 Marks as Criteria for Medical Admission
Retired judge of Madras High Court Justice A K Rajan has requested the Tamil Nadu Government to abolish the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) through legal and/or legislative procedures in order to offer equal opportunities to students from different boards of education.
Former Madras High Court Judge Justice A K Rajan has urged the Tamil Nadu government to conduct medical admissions on the basis of Plus 2 marks and abolishment of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) using legal and/or legislative means.
In addition, the panel has also requested to make higher secondary examination marks the sole criteria for admission to first-year medical programmes. The panel insisted that the government must ensure equality in chances for students from different boards of education and the normalisation of scores to be followed.
Panel Suggestions Based on Feedback from Stakeholders
The panel was established to investigate the effects of the NEET-based admissions process following the DMK stormed to power in 2021. The committee's research, which reveals NEET's anti-poor and anti-social justice nature, has been released and distributed to several state governments. It is based on in-depth data analysis and feedback from students, parents, and the general public, as reported by Hindustan Times.
"the State government may undertake immediate steps to eliminate NEET, as qualifying criteria for admission to medical programmes, by following the required legal and/or legislative procedures." The committee further suggested.
The committee advised that in order to guarantee equal opportunities for students coming from different boards of education, higher secondary scores should be the sole criteria for admission to first-degree medical programs.
Moreover, the panel also stated that the rote form of learning assessment that leads to coaching must be eliminated and the acquired knowledge and skills must be prioritised.
