RDA Amritsar urges NMC to allow only medical postgraduates for medical colleges' teaching

Resident Doctors Association of Amritsar has written to the Chairman of National Medical Commission to request the appointment of only medical postgraduates as teachers in medical colleges.

The letter reads, "Under the old regulations of the MCI, non medical postgraduates were appointed in certain departments due to shortage of medical postgraduates. However, with the increase in the number of medical graduates qualifying for postgraduate studies in paraclinical subjects, the NMC has issued an order stating that only 15% of faculty members in these departments can be non medical postgraduates."

Applied clinical knowledge is crucial for teaching subjects like Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pharmacology and Microbiology. Without this knowledge, students struggle to understand and connect clinical studies. Only MBBS graduates with relevant postgraduate qualifications can effectively teach these subjects with applied medical importance, especially considering the integration of pre/paraclinical subjects into the clinical curriculum as part of the revised CBME, added the official statement of RDA Amritsar.

Last month, IMA had also written to the Union Health Ministry and requested to ensure that only medical postgraduates be considered eligible candidates for appointment in the medical colleges.

“We appeal to the NMC and ministry to maintain the high standards of medical education to produce best doctors in our country and don’t relax the standards set by NMC,” the IMA letter dated July 19 said. “We request you to resist the appeal of non-medical graduates and allow only medical postgraduates as eligible candidates for appointment in the medical colleges to uphold the CBME (competency-based medical education) syllabus with quality. The non-medical postgraduate faculties continuing in medical colleges shall be adjusted within the 15 per cent limit already notified by the NMC,” it added.
